What is the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA)?

What are competitive CFA scores?

Competitive scores vary by academy and gender. As a general benchmark, male candidates should aim for 20+ pull-ups, 75+ push-ups, 80+ sit-ups, and a sub-6:00 mile. How is the CFA scored?

Each event is scored on a scale, and scores are combined into a composite. Academies evaluate the composite score as part of the whole-person assessment — there is no single passing score, but low scores in any event can hurt an application. Academies look for balance across all six events.

The Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy do not require congressional nominations.

It is required for admission to West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy. Candidates typically apply to their two U.S. Senators and their U.S. Representative — that's three potential nomination sources. Applications open in the spring of junior year and are due in the fall of senior year. Competition is significant; most candidates apply to all three sources.

DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board) conducts the medical qualification review for all service academy applicants. Candidates complete a physical examination at a designated facility.
